The Belgian Constitution prescribes in article 22 "Everyone has the right to the respect of his private and family life, except in the cases and conditions determined by law."
Besides this general protection of the right of privacy, several laws protect the right to privacy of the patient more in detail.

A distinction is made between the right to privacy of the patient as such and the obligation of the physician to medical secrecy.
