  1. The physician in charge of the treatment shall inform the patient about his/her health during the treatment. The content of this right to information is not the same as the content of the information in relation to the right of informed consent. As was stated above, this is the second stage in which there exists a right to information, different from the first stage (informed consent).
The physician is obliged to inform the patient amongst others about his/her health condition and the need for treatment and the disease in connection with which the patient has sought medical aid, and its prognosis.
  2. The patient has a right not to know. This right is not absolute. According to article 92 (2) of the Health Act it can only be applied to the information about the disease in connection with which the patient has sought medical aid, and its prognosis and the information about the planned preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation activities, as well as the related risks.
The refusal of information should be given by the patient in writing. It will be reflected in writing in the patient’s medical file.
  3. There is no legal regulation of the therapeutic exception in Bulgarian health law; therefore the physician cannot restrict the right to information in any way.
