Genetic testing in Spain is governed by a specific legal framework. The Basic Law 14/2007 of 3 July 2007 on Biomedical Research contains a comprehensive regulation regarding genetic analyses.

A distinction was made between the right to informed consent, the right to information about his or her health, the rights regarding the medical file, the right to privacy, the prohibition of discrimination, the use of predictive tests, genetic screening, genetic counselling and quality requirements all in relation to users of genetic services.
