- The medical staff, as far as possible, shall co-operate with the patient when planning the treatment and
when treating him/her. Furthermore, the medical staff are given the following responsibilities: The person in charge of the care must secure that the patient receives information
about his/her state of illness and the methods of treatment available
If the information cannot be given to the patient, the information shall instead
be given to the next of kin. If hindrance of leaving information exists the information may not be given out to the patient.
- Furthermore, the patient must be given as precise and detailed information as possible concerning his/her condition and be stimulated to actively search for information and to scrutinise or try to adapt to this information. The personnel must try to adapt the information to the ability of the patient so that he/she understands the information that is given him/her. When, how, and to what extent the information shall be given to the patient must be determined in each individual case. This cannot be regulated in
detail. When an extensive and more hazardous operation must be performed, it is
of importance to give the patient a detailed account of the situation, while a simple
procedure may not demand that as much information is given the patient.
- No
regulations exist which require any notation to be made in the patient's case sheet
of what information has been given to the patient. However, it is desirable that a notation of given information is made in the patient's case sheet.
- The head physician has a duty to inform the next of kin if the patient becomes seriously ill. The relatives ought to be informed regularly, at least in a case of a more serious
illness or if the patient is unable to inform his/her relatives himself/herself. If,
however, the patient does not wish the relatives to be informed, the medical staff
must respect this as well.
- The patient has a right not only to receive information orally about his/ her state of illness but also to read hislher own case sheet.
